Winx: It’s going to be a Super Queen Elizabeth II!

At Royal Randwick, on Day 2 of the Championships, the highlight of the Autumn Racing Carnival saw the final race of Australia’s champion racehorse, Winx.

Lovers of the annual MySuper MyMelbourneCup blog would have been disappointed if the milestone went past without appropriate acknowledgement! I always like to draw parallels between my professional occupation – superannuation – and my personal passion, horse racing.

In the super industry we are currently debating the merits or otherwise of a ‘best of class regime’ but in horse racing, Winx is clearly the champion of her generation, and arguably up there with the greats of the past – Carbine, Phar Lap, Tulloch, Kingston Town to name but a few.

In an era where the top colts – think Pierro, All Too Hard, Vancouver and more recently The Autumn Sun – are whisked off to stud as three and four year olds – as the lure of a lifetime income stream, a bit like a DB pensioner in a generous DB scheme – is all too attractive, Winx has turned up year after year to race and defeat the country’s best.

Just like super funds require excellent strategic asset allocation, the team led by trainer Chris Waller, has placed Winx to perfection. When Winx started her winning run as a three year old in the Brisbane winter carnival who could have anticipated what lay ahead – particularly, 4 Cox Plates! An outstanding achievement.

Like a good CEO and executive, jockey Hugh Bowman, has navigated the great mare through many challenges – on different tracks and different surfaces.

Competition is quite important, and it is very fitting that two of Winx’s formidable challengers that have often filled the minor placings – Hartnell and Happy Clapper – will be there for her final race.

Just as my Grandfather and Dad told me stories of seeing the great Phar Lap and Don Bradman, those that will be at Royal Randwick tomorrow will be able to share with their children and grandchildren the thrill of seeing Australia’s mighty mare, Winx.

All that remains to be said is – Go Winx and hope you all have a Super day!

And she did not disappoint.
